PeeknPoke Game two: Death Wish III  (Gremlin Graphics)
Emulators: Spectrum / Commodore 64   Download: Death Wish III Spectrum / Death Wish III C64

<------- Previous Game of the month

In homage to the death of Charles Bronson, PeeknPoke bring you a game released in 1987 based on those shockingly bad films (Michael Winner should never be allowed to make films -fact!). Still, Bronson was a great actor, underused in later years. Death Wish is a shooty action game that was slightly underated when released. It is a fun game with nice graphics and neat touches and great to fill an afternoon with. You can play it either on your C64 or Spectrum emulator if you so wish.

Below is a copy of the instructions that came with the game (Spectrum)

AIM : You play Charles Bronson's leading role of street vigilante Paul
Kersey, and you are out to rid the city of the punks and creeps who
infest the streets. It won't be easy - locals can get caught up in the
action, as can the cops. Shoot too many and you will find that they
become less than friendly. Punks and creeps are easily identified but
your prime targets are the notorious gang leaders, lolling around behind
their desks.

GAMEPLAY : The action takes place in the top two thirds of the screen,
and there is an information display in the lower third to help you. A
compass will help you to find your way around the city and shows your
direction of view - north, south, east or west.

Your location in the city is shown on the map alongside your compass,
and is always orientated in the direction of view. The map can also be
toggled to inform you of either the whereabouts of gang leaders or the
location of replacement weapons. Blue shows weapons, yellow shows gang
leaders.

You have four type of weapon at your disposal, each with its own effect
and (limited) supply of ammo: a .475  Magnum, a pump-action
shotgun, a machine gun and a rocket launcher. The weapon currently being
used and its remaining ammo are shown at the bottom of the screen.

The lower part of the screen also contains the information you'll need
to fight the criminals of New York. A printout from the police HQ warns
you of where riots are breaking out. The city centre is the most
dangerous place to be, as gangs from the outlying regions will fight
for control of it. The condition of your bulletproof vest and your
state of health are shown. Too many hits are fatal!

Buildings may be entered and searched for extra weapons or gang
members. You can approach windows and look through them; a gun sight
will appear and allow you to fire into the street outside. Higher
points are given for shooting from windows, but watch out for creeps
attacking from behind!

NOW : A dull, and slightly sick, game. A bit like the film really.
